Saturday is Food for Me and To Share Day

Image
I spend my Saturday mornings in the kitchen.  They are "food for me and to share days". Today  (19th June 2021) Cream of Crab and Shrimp Soup (Cardiac arrest territory)  ------------------------------- Back left: Meat Loaf with hidden bits of bacon and bratwurst.  Back right: Oyster Mushrooms sautéed in butter.   Front and Centre: Mashed Potatoes and Carrots.  ------------------------------------------------------------------- Now you know for what  I was shopping at Detwilers when my shopping cart was purloined! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As for the Cobia Fish. I'd bought it to make fish stock for a Crab Bisque. Then I realised that the recipe for my Cream of Crab and Shrimp Soup didn't call for fish stock. So it will be poached or baked Cobia for lunch on Sunday. ----------------------------------------- RECIPE for cholesterol  danger  soup. https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/68191/karyns-cream-of-crab-soup/

(Mis)adventures in the Supermarket.

Image
It's probably happened to you.  In a crowded and busy Supermarket you have walked away with another customer's shopping cart; or another customer has swanned away with yours.  Silly mistakes; easily rectified. Once upon a time  in the always busy "Market Basket"  in Somerville, MA    I stood in front of my cart at the check out.  A woman in line behind me also stood in front of her cart. I looked  back.  The good woman was nibbling on bagged grapes from my cart!   We both saw the silly side of this.  No blood was shed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This morning I loaded  my cart with some specific items which I needed  from our local  Detwiler's Farm Market. I remembered that I needed whipping cream so I paused for a moment, left my cart in the aisle, and walked back to the dairy coolers. Then my cart vanished. In its place was another cart, bearing items I had not bought. Sounds simple eh?  Someone had walked aw

Fruits de la mer ( and seafood from Latvia) [ and the end of the world! ]

My personal and Facebook friend Bill Travis correctly ascertained that I am a fan of smoked shellfish. He sent me this link https://buy.taylorshellfishfarms.com/ekone-canned-products/ I want it all;  but I cannot afford it all! Yummy to the max! I cannot afford it all  but I do have a can of seafood from Latvia . Smoked Sprats If you have never tasted or eaten Sprats you have my deepest sympathy! As for me I am saving my can of Sprats ( a gift from my friend Ashley) as a special treat to be eaten on    the day before the end of the world,   or on next Wednesday,   which ever comes first.

Diego Garcia - An Island (and a Person)

Image
Diego Garcia (The  Island) is the Indian Ocean. It is part of the British Indian Ocean Territories; now leased (maybe illegally under International Law) to the U.S.A. to be a huge military base.  (Hint, hint, the local populace was moved off the  Island to make way for the American Military) Diego Garcia (the Person) is a friend of mine. Here he is with Zion the wonder dog, outside of  Panera Bread on University Parkway/Tuttle Ave (SRQ) a few years ago. Diego the person and I had  lovely breakfast yesterday (Tuesday 15th June 2021) at a "pretty good" French Cafe at Sarasota's University Town Center.  Better than the food was our conversation. I'll tell you more about that tomorrow.

Another Good Park for My Morning Jaunts with Zion.

Image
I sometimes skip our morning walks at Arlington Park in favour of a jaunt at Sarasota's famous PAYNE PARK. It's a semi sacred spot for me, cause the Boston Red Sox at one time called it home for Spring Training. Payne Park does not have the semi-rustic charm of Arlington Park ; with its old growth trees, shady areas, and "water fowl abundant" pond. Nor should it be compared with Bayfront Park with its marinas, off shore mooring fields, and lovely breezes from the Bay. But Payne Park has its own delightful  worth. Here is some stuff which tells the Payne Park tale https://www.escape-to-sarasota.com/payne-park.html What the Payne Park website cannot convey is the utter delight for Zion and me,  when we are the only walkers there  in the very early morning. Zion's nose  enjoys the pee mail left by the previous evenings canine visitors. My eyes rejoice in the beauty of this urban oasis. My ears are caressed by the early morning bird song. --------------------------

Don't Ask Me Why.

I had a good breakfast this morning. Smoked trout, smeared with avocado. Lunch was good too.  Roasted Lamb, roasted Potatoes,  and roasted stuffed mushrooms. Mid afternoon I had a taste memory, and longing for a simple evening meal. Zion and I had a short afternoon walk in the shady areas of Arlington Park, from where we went to a Publix Supermarket on the Tamiami Trail -  the one which has a covered and cooler parking area -  cool enough to leave Z in the car (with opened windows) for a wee shopping trip. There I bought the two items I thought I would enjoy for supper. Mandarin Oranges,  chilled in the fridge with Evaporated Milk. Back at home my taste bud memories deserted me.  What I'd thought would be tasty was no longer appealing.  I'll save these canned foods for the lurking apocalypse.  The memory was deeper.  Back to the days when Mum's food budget was under severe pressure.   Canned fruit with evaporated milk was a fairly rare "treat". God bless my d
