Memorial Day: For our Freedom or For our Fun?
I am displaying this wee flag outside my home in respectful honour of those members of the American military who have been killed on duty, from the War of Independence until now.
It's on the day (May 31st in 2021) which we call Memorial Day. A day for the solemn remembrance of the terrible human cost of war; especially, but not exclusively, the widowed and orphaned it leaves in its wake.
BUT NOT EVERYONE GOT THE MEMO
Two days ago I was in a gated "adjacent to golf course" community. A Golf Cart parade was in the making. The carts were lined up, all covered in "patriotic" bling; cup holders bearing beer cans; a party spirit in the air
I'd sooner have seen a solemn walking procession down the middle of the street. Men in suits with black arm bands on the jackets; women wearing hats adorned with black crepe. A pause every five minutes for quiet reflection; for tears; maybe even for prayer.
A day for mourning, not for merriment.
