1st May. A durn good day

My handyman finished up the repairs/renovations  which were needed because of my minor flood. He put in the dry wall, them primed and painted it. He'd re-constructed the cupboard which had been badly damaged.  Skilled man that he is, he made it about 2" less wide.  My new to me  (but previously owned) fridge had been a tight fit, now it has breathing room. My kitchen cabinets are old and tired, and I am too old and tired to replace them!    When I go to England in September  (fingers crossed)  he will repaint them. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ashley came for lunch.   She and I ate at separate tables on the Lanai.    We split a fabulous  vegetarian quesadilla  from the redoubtable "Reyna's Taquieria"  here in town, and enjoyed their flan for dessert. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Then it was off to the brand new and spiffy "Tyre K

Feeling righteous in Pandemic Days

Hands for illustration purposes only.  They are not my actual hands.   I feel so righteous and responsible when washing my hands for twenty seconds that I often prolong it to twenty one seconds.

SARASOTA impresses me

I Like Sarasota! $18 million + raised in 24 Hours! Yes  $18 million + raised in 24 Hours! The event was organised by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, with (more than) matching funds from the Patterson Foundation. The way it worked was this. Individuals could make donations  for any number of their chosen non profits, but only gifts of up to $100 were eligible for matching. A $25 donation became $75; a $50 donation became $150; and a $100 donation became $300. No chance for fat cats to make a name for themselves; but an opportunity for ordinary folks to make an unlimited number donations of up to $100,  for as many  different non-profits of their choosing. The results were astounding.  Within twenty four  hours 59,000 donors had supported the effort, which benefited 687 recipients. A remarkable total of more than $18 million. It made my heart glad  to see that Sarasota's "All Faith Food Bank"  led the pack with a total of

My Flood Revisited, and Supporting Locally Owned Businesses.

Last Friday when Mr. Handyman was clearing up the mess caused by a failure in a water line to the fridge I realised that this was not the day to cook lunch. So I ordered some take out  (or is it take away?) food from my local and wonderful Reyna's Taqueria.  It is the best! Reyna's is owned by  Mexican born/American citizens married gay couple.  They describe their offerings as "Authentic Mexican Cravings".  We like their food and we like them.  We want their business to succeed despite the COVID 19 restrictions. Reyna's is an asset to our neighbourhood.  You can read about it here: https://reynastaqueria.com/about/ Using curb side pick up I ordered Burrito Carnitas  (slowly roasted and marinated pork shoulder). So very good, and enough for lunch on Friday and on Saturday. Oh so good! You can see some of their other offerings here: https://reynastaqueria.com/gallery/

They run; the young men run. Bodies lean, lithe, taut, and fit. Still waisted. The old men, with paunches more grandiose than their own youthful ambitions, look on with envy and regret. Now wasted.

My flood: A darned nuisance, but not a disaster.

It was Thursday last (23rd April)  that I noticed some grunge seeping at the floor level of a cabinet between my fridge and my oven. I at first thought that I had created the mess by dropping some bit of food on the floor. I swabbed it.  It came back.   I swabbed it again.  It came back again. And the same on my third try. A bit later I opened the cabinet in which I store my dog's kibble - fortunately as it happens in a plastic storage box - to find that the "floor" of the cabinet had caved in.   Whereupon I called my trusty handyman who arrived on Friday morning before the great rains had set in. He/we discovered that the line which brings water from the sink to the fridge had failed. The bottom shelf of the cabinet  (vintage 1973 made of particle board)  had collapsed into mush because of the reservoir which had been  established in the hollow "plinth" on which the cabinet stood. Oh my goodness.   Mush everywhere, and dry wall soaked as to be u
