Limits of Technology 1: Petrol/Gas in Florida.

Image
Florida 12th May 2021 Yes the lines for Petrol/Gas are long in Florida; due to the Ransomware attack on a major gas/petrol pipeline. Hi-Tech has brought us many good things; but it has its down sides,  Isn't it shocking that one of the most important pipelines in the U.S.A should be so at risk from bad actors.  And why in heaven's name are the important refineries are situated on the flood plains of the Gulf of Mexico coast; bringing with them air pollution and water pollution, at ever at risk from hurricanes, There is nothing I can do about the technology (and I cannot afford an all electric car) I should be able to resist anxiety  but to my shame I drove out at 5:00 a.m. yesterday (12th May) and filled my tank at a local BP gas station - having passed two gas stations which were already sold out. Now I am doing my best to eke out what gas I have to make it last until supplies are more abundant (the pipeline is operating again, so that will be soon). There is a good sid...

The Memory Land of Taste and Smell: There Was WEETABIX, another low sugar high fibre cereal

Image
Still very popular in the U.K., but not well known in the U.S.A. It's a very crumbly cereal.  We'd eat it in a bowl with cold milk; or sometimes with warm milk, in which case it would disintegrate into a kind of  "wheat -  oatmeal" Every now and then we would spread it with butter and Golden Syrup  and eat it for a snack, always being sure to eat over a plate to catch the crumbs; and licking the syrup from our fingers. C+ or B- in my rating scheme. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Puffed Wheat was higher on my ratings scale. Probably a B+ The "Quaker" brand   (nothing to do with the real Quakers) gave it a certain "je ne sais quoi". Now you can't find it for love nor money.  It's likely that it is no longer made by "Quaker".   I have tried some small brand substitutes but they don't quite "make it". -----------------------------------------------------------------------...

Memories: Sometimes a Smell or Taste Will Trigger Them.

Image
My taste buds gave me a memory today.   It was of the breakfast cereal "Shredded Wheat". I liked and ate them in my childhood and youth: always best with warmed milk. My taste bud memory was so delicious that I bought some at my local supermarket.  They'll set me up for breakfast for at least nine days; probably with  a sliced banana. I'd thought of them as a NABISCO  ( Na tional Bi scuit Co mpany) product made in Niagara Falls, NY. Whoever now owns NABISCO sold the business to whoever now owns  the C.W. Post label. Never be surprised if your "all American", or "all British" Company is owned by a Taiwanese Company with headquarters in Lichtenstein.  Be greatly alarmed that most of the international food business is in the hands of about four megalith corporations.

Zion Visits His Honorary Grandmother on Mothers' Day

Image
When we visit Donna and Jack Chrisman and Ashley Lloyd;  Zion inevitably takes himself to be near Donna. I've decided that if I am Zion's Papa, Donna must be his honorary Grandmother. We were at the Chrisman/Lloyd home today for a Mothers' Day Lunch.   Zion took his usual place.   Jack C looked on. P.S. Mother's Day if it is a celebration of one's own mother. Mothers' Day if it is a loving recognition of all mothers. (Zion's Day? 365/6 will do it for me!)
