Lunch at home today (August 4th 2018)

Home made.

Cauliflower, white asparagus, and flounder - baked in a cheese sauce.

Oh so very good!

(Next time I'll add green or red bell peppers  [maybe even raw] for colour and texture.   Good food needs flavour, colour, texture, and nutritional value)

Au revoir gift

Zion's summer boyfriend Clover (the Labradoodle who lives across the street) has gone back to Ohio.

He left Zion a nice gift

As Z. and I walked in the park this morning a couple of joggers passed us.

Z. lunged and barked at them.

No harm done, but Zion got a gentle but firm wigging from me.

Planning a vacation in South Florida? Maybe that's not too wise.

Think again if you are coming to Florida for the beaches and for a swim in the Gulf.

(1) We are in a mess -  due to what is commonly called Red Tide.

Sarasota's Mote Marine Laboratory has teamed up with our local newspaper to provide scientifically sound information about Red Tide.

Republicans who do not believe in science should not read this.

Instead they should look for a tweet from the Narcissist in Chief.

(2) Red tide is not caused by the Toxic Algae bloom which is killing streams, lagoons and rivers (and all that is therein) in south Florida.  (We have two coincidental issues: - Red Tide and Algae bloom).

Caloosahatchee River

Indian River Lagoon

Fish kill.

There are various causes of the Toxic Algae Bloom.

Certainly the Republican Governor of Florida  (Rick Scott) and the Republican dominated Florida House and Senate should be blamed.

It has been their clear policy to reduce or eliminate environmental protection policies and regulations, which were designed to make Florida's waters, rivers and springs more pure and free of pollutants.

Certainly the Republicans have been beholden to "Big Sugar" (an awful lot of sugar is produced from sugar cane in Florida) and the enormous contributions which the Sugar Barons make to Republican electoral campaign funds.

( I hope that I am correct in saying that U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, (R. FL) once said that protection of  the Sugar industry in Florida is a matter of national security).

Certainly Republican dominated County governments have been cavalier to the point of irresponsibility in  allowing building developments on vital swamps and wetlands.

And please see the following from Wikipedia regarding the environmental issues surrounding Lake Okeechobee.

I hasten to add that Florida's Democrats are not simon pure about our pollution problems.  They are simply the least worst. "He who pays the piper calls the tune" -  Democrats are paid much less than Republicans.

TOURISTS:  Think again if you are coming to Florida for the beaches and for a swim in the Gulf or the Atlantic.

I am serious. Tourism is a vital part of our economy.  But why would you want to visit us if our waterways, lagoons, rivers and beaches are hopelessly polluted?

Will you visit here when the Everglades are dead?

Will Orlando/Disney be enough to bring you here?

RETIREES: Why in the world would you retire to a Peninsula where the beaches are dead, the oceans stink, and the waterways are utterly polluted?

Honouring our Elders

Joyce and Howard are my near neighbours.   They are a delightful couple who have been married for seventy two years.  That's just about a lifetime!  (I am seventy four years old -  I was two when they were wed.)  Sorry, no photo' available.

Sarasota philanthropist Betty Schoenbaum died this week, just two months short of her one hundred and first birthday.

She and her late husband Alex  (the founder of the Shoney's restaurant chain)  were generous to the max.  They gave many millions of dollars to charitable causes.

As Betty famously said  "remember that hearses do not have luggage racks"  (in other words, "you can't  take it with you").

Betty had a keen wit. She did not drink alcohol and she did not eat chocolate.  A reporter asked "if you do not like chocolate or alcohol  what do you like?"

Betty responded " Well I had a baby when I was 49".

Glory be for Betty, and for Howard and Joyce.

Oh dear

I decided to clean and tidy my utility room today. In my condo it is a discrete room with its own door, quite separate from my unit with its two bedrooms, two bathrooms etc.

The utility room is home to a washer, dryer, and water heater --  it's a bit like a basement, but at ground floor level.

Like many basements this room has also doubled as a junk room.

So it needed to be de-junked today.

Here it is after my clean up.

I can now find what I need.

The room has a small window with curtains that I've not washed  in "oh so many years".

I did so today.

This is how they emerged from my washing machine, all shred apart.

My mother would not be proud of me!

Rain Moules Dogs

It's easy to forget that summer is the rainy season in south west Florida.

We advise our guests to go to the Beach in the morning as we anticipate wild thunderstorms and monsoon rains, often at about 4:00 p.m.

It's been different this year.  We are in a stalled weather system with overcast skies, rumbling thunder and short, sharp heavy rainfalls throughout the day.

The dog and I enjoyed two longish walks earlier (one at the Park) but as the day progressed we've had to take mini-walks in between the heavy showers.

( How I wish that we could export our rain to fire ravaged northern California).

At about 3:30 this afternoon I had a sudden yen for Moules Frites.

Oh Belgium where are thou?

One of our local Whole Foods stores has an in store cafe  (somewhat pretentiously called "Brassiere Honore").  (The store is on Honore Ave).

Moules/Frites are served there.  Should I take a chance and eat there, or am I bound to discover that Whole Foods Moules/Frites are but a pale imitation of the Belgian original?

An Ohio family owns a villa immediately across the street from mine. It's their holiday home, and they are here for just a few weeks each year.

This year they have brought with them a young Labradoodle named Clover.

He and Zion have become the best of pals!

Free Speech

Free speech as defined in the U.K.'s Highest Court back in 1998.
