Think again if you are coming to Florida for the beaches and for a swim in the Gulf.
(1) We are in a mess - due to what is commonly called Red Tide.
Sarasota's Mote Marine Laboratory has teamed up with our local newspaper to provide scientifically sound information about Red Tide.

Republicans who do not believe in science should not read this.
Instead they should look for a tweet from the Narcissist in Chief.

(2) Red tide is not caused by the Toxic Algae bloom which is killing streams, lagoons and rivers (and all that is therein) in south Florida. (We have two coincidental issues: - Red Tide and Algae bloom).
Caloosahatchee River
Fish kill.

There are various causes of the Toxic Algae Bloom.
Certainly the Republican Governor of Florida (Rick Scott) and the Republican dominated Florida House and Senate should be blamed.
It has been their clear policy to reduce or eliminate environmental protection policies and regulations, which were designed to make Florida's waters, rivers and springs more pure and free of pollutants.
Certainly the Republicans have been beholden to "Big Sugar" (an awful lot of sugar is produced from sugar cane in Florida) and the enormous contributions which the Sugar Barons make to Republican electoral campaign funds.
( I hope that I am correct in saying that U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, (R. FL) once said that protection of the Sugar industry in Florida is a matter of national security).
Certainly Republican dominated County governments have been cavalier to the point of irresponsibility in allowing building developments on vital swamps and wetlands.
And please see the following from Wikipedia regarding the environmental issues surrounding Lake Okeechobee.

I hasten to add that Florida's Democrats are not simon pure about our pollution problems. They are simply the least worst. "He who pays the piper calls the tune" - Democrats are paid much less than Republicans.

TOURISTS: Think again if you are coming to Florida for the beaches and for a swim in the Gulf or the Atlantic.
I am serious. Tourism is a vital part of our economy. But why would you want to visit us if our waterways, lagoons, rivers and beaches are hopelessly polluted?
Will you visit here when the Everglades are dead?
Will Orlando/Disney be enough to bring you here?
RETIREES: Why in the world would you retire to a Peninsula where the beaches are dead, the oceans stink, and the waterways are utterly polluted?
