Keep On the Bright Side of Life. #1

Image
I ran over a curb on Thursday morning whilst making a left turn; after which I heard a rubbing noise on the front right hand tyre when I made hard left turns. My guess was that the mud flap had been dislodged. With that in mind I went to my trusted local auto repair shop this morning to make an appointment. The staff there know me by name -  it pays to do business locally ! I did not need an appointment.  It was a quiet morning, so Ge..y fixed the problem immediately.  The mud flap needed to be re-attached.  He did so at no charge!   -   it pays to do business locally ! There is a six pack of beer in his future! The photo gives you a hint.  Corner of Lockwood Ridge Rd and 17th St. in Sarasota.    A trusty business.

I Dreamed Last Night About the Delany Sisters.

Who were/are they you might ask. See this https://www.nycommunitytrust.org/newsroom/the-delany-sisters-a-relationship-that-lasted-over-a-hundred-years/ In my dream I met them at some kind of church conference.  There they were, as elegant as could be in lovely suits, and each wearing a trilby hat. In my dream one of them was profoundly deaf and could not hear a word I said.  The other was supposed to be my counsellor, but I had no idea of why she was to counsel me. (Was my sub-conscious mind telling me to learn from wise lack women?) For more about these great women see:   https://blackamericaweb.com/2014/09/28/little-known-black-history-fact-the-delany-sisters/ They were two of the children of the very first Black Bishop (and his wife of course) in the Episcopal Church. Sounds good until you note that Bishop Delany was a Suffragan (assistant) Bishop with no real authority in the Episcopal Church,  except to establish segregated Black congregations in some Dioceses in formerly Confed

And Now For Something Completely Different. ( and some Soul Evocative Music)

What do you know about the Iona (Christian) Community based on the Scottish Island of Iona; and in Govan, Glasgow, Scotland? Here's a bit of the history of Iona/Govan.   https://iona.org.uk/about-us/history/ I've been to Iona twice.  It's a beautiful (but very small) Island. My second visit was for two weeks (1999) which was one week too long! I had a form of claustrophobia when the final ferry of the day left Iona to be berthed near the Island of Mull overnight.  I couldn't get out!   (I am a "City Person"!)  The music of the Community is splendid; much of it written and composed by the Musician-in-Residence, John Bell. Here is one of his gems, called The Summons, and based on the call by Jesus to Peter, James and John. This kind of christian  music is my "soul food". Here it is, sung with verve at a Cathedral in Glasgow. https://youtu.be/zk6IUalJ3sk Please enjoy!

Don't Tell Anyone

My "stimulus" money was placed in my bank account today, and I am not even Irish.   Let's keep this a secret.

Millions of Americans.....

......  have sore fingers. They have been logging in to their bank accounts every hour on the hour, to see if their governmental stimulus payments ($ 1,400 ) have been deposited. I looked once  (or maybe twice!). Ain't Socialism Great!

I Will Never Again Make Mashed Potatoes

Instead I will make the Irish/Scottish variant called Colcannon. 1.  Cook and Mash yer favourite spuds. I use two largish and cleaned up Russets, with the skins still on. 2.  Fry 1/2 pound of bacon (cut into small bits) until it is wonderfully crispy. 3.   Reserve the bacon, and then gently sauté three cups of shredded cabbage in the bacon fat. 4.  Mix and mash  it all together - spuds,  bacon, and sautéed cabbage. Lo and behold you have made Colcannon .   It does not get much better than this. Some to eat, and some to share.
