Amanda Card Ray ( see my blog from yesterday)

Below is the published obit for Amanda.

 I will not be able to attend the services. It's all too complicated to book (very expensive) air flights at short notice, and to arrange dog care etc.

 But of course I will get up to Atlanta to see my dear and good friend  Steve Card and his partner Rick as soon as it is feasible.

 I knew Amanda's great grandmother Annie Speed; her grandmother Ruth Card; and her mother and father Steve and Susan.

 When I first met Steve and his family when they were visiting Fitchburg, MA  (1977?) I quietly wondered "why is he married?"  

 My gaydar was accurate!

 But the times they are a changing. In due course Steve and Susan were divorced. 

 Then Steve met Rick.  When the law was changed they were able to marry. 

 I think that it is bloody marvelous that Rick was identified in the obit. as Amanda's step-father.  Such utter graciousness in the face of grief.

 Shared grief eh?   Steve, Susan, Rick, Kasey, Emma, Sophie, Lola, Matthew Card  et al are smitten to the core by her death.

 I share that grief at one step removed.

 The death at aged 42 of a beloved wife, mother, child, parent and daughter is horrendous.

Obituary for Amanda Card Ray.

Amanda Card Ray, age 42, of Canton, GA passed away Monday, April 23, 2018 at Emory University Hospital Hospice. She has been an Early Childhood Educator for 20+ years with 19 years of that time teaching at High Meadows School and Camp in Roswell, Georgia.

Funeral services are scheduled for 12:00 PM, on Friday, April 27, 2018, from the Chapel of South Canton Funeral Home with Rev. Terry Caylor officiating. Mrs. Ray will be cremated following the service.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, April 25, 2018, and from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, April 26, 2018, and from 11:00 AM until the Funeral Hour on Friday, April 27, 2018 at South Canton Funeral Home.

Survivors include:

Daughter - Emma Elisabeth Ray
Daughter - Sophia "Sophie" Elise Ray
Daughter - Lola Kate Ray
Mother - Susan Card
Father - Steven Card
Step-Father - Rick Freeman
Father-In-Law And Mother-In-Law - Hugh (Janie) Ray
Brother - Matthew Card & Erin Foy
Brother-in-law - Kyle (Karen) Ray
Several Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and other Family and Friends also survive

Family request Orchids (her favorite flower) be sent or donations are to be made to the Humane Society of your choice in her Memory.

Last year I consulted with a local podiatrist: Dr. Robert F Herbold Jr. D.P.M. 4717 Swift Rd., Sarasota , FL – 34231  because I was being bothered with a couple of bunions  (yes I am at that age). The background, the couple, my friends, the wedding ceremony, the Shaykh, the Priest,

The background   I have known the Keller/Bonsey family since 2000 when I became the Rector at St. James's, Cambridge, MA. They (Elisabeth Keller and the Revd. Steven Bonsey with their four children Noah, Sam, Josiah and Annie) had come back to Cambridge from Hawaii where Steve had been the Rector of an Episcopal parish. Steve had just been appointed as a Chaplain at Tufts University (no Sunday morning duties) so the entire family was able to enrich our common life at St. James's - which they did with great love and joy. I count them as friends and have stayed in touch with them since my retirement.  Noah, the oldest son is eloquent in Arabic (he spent a year in Damascus when Syria was a safe place).  He has developed a super career as an analyst of social media in the near East.    Noah worked in Tampa for a while a few years ago, so he and I were able to get together a few

It began in Bristol U.K. "A man dies" and "Jesus Christ Superstar"
