President-elect Joe Biden and Senator Chuck Schumer were wrong.
In the aftermath of the violent assault on the Capitol by Trump supporters both Biden and Schumer mouthed platitudes such as "this is not America".
They are 180 degrees from the truth.
Violence is at the core of our history.
1. Before there was a United States of America there was consistent violence by the Colonialists against the noble indigenous people whose home this land had been for thousands of years.
2. Before there was a United States of America there was consistent violence against west African men. women, and children who brought here against their wills to be sold and enslaved.
3. The founding document "The Declaration of Independence" declared that the indigenous peoples were "savages".
4. After Independence was achieved (via violence!) hundreds of thousands of west African peoples continued to be enslaved. There was only cruelty for them - no independence.
The list goes on and on CRUELTY UPON CRUELTY.
The Indian Clearance Laws
The Fugitive Slave Act
The "Jim Crow" laws, and lynchings of Black Americans which
neither respected their dignity, nor acknowledged their rights under law.
The subtle but pervasive and violent economic racism in the States, (south and north) to this day.

Have I made my point?
President-elect Biden and Senator Schumer You mean well, but as it has been said "the road to hell is paved with good intentions".
Good intentions are not worth a bucket of spit for Native and African Americans.
Your good intentions are nothing worth until you lead the Nation into (1) repentance for our violent/racist past/present; (2) reparations for the evil which has been done in our names; (3) repudiation of all our unjust laws and practices; (4) renewal of freedom from institutional violence for all our peoples.
