Mundaneities


Christian prayer often seems to be a matter of giving good advice to God. God is probably responding: “my dearly beloved, I do not need your advice.  I simply want you to listen to the heart-beat of the universe”. 



  I found a little snake in my home today.  It was no more than 2 ½ inches long.  I think that it came in out of the rain.


 I am preaching at the 8:00 and 10:00 Eucharists tomorrow (Aug 21st 2011) at St. Boniface Church.  

When I began to preach (at aged 16 years) I was filled with certainties about God, Jesus and the Bible.

51 years later I have fewer certainties. Maybe my preaching is better.

But it’s much harder to put a sermon together than it used to be.



  I was chatting with a local handyman on Friday last.  I told him that I am 68 years old.    As he drove away I remembered that I am “only” 67!



In a moment of “hurry” I bought a barbecued chicken at my local “Publix” supermarket earlier today.  Boy  -  was it over-cooked and dry. I redeemed a bit of it for my supper, wrapping it in soft tortillas with a bit of sour cream, some excellent chopped up “heritage” tomato, and some delicious Florida avocado. I’ll use the balance to make chicken salad – that should moisten it up enough.



 I am blessed to share my home with a dog called Penne.  She is a mutt: part retriever and part terrier.  She has the sweetest disposition.  Neither thunder nor lightning bother her.  And when I have to give her a pill she opens her jaws quite willingly, and then swallows it down as I massage her throat.

My brother Stephen celebrated his 59th birthday on August 18th 2011. He is a good guy, and we had a nice chat that day. 

Stephen is the third in line of my four younger brothers.

    Don't fret to much about getting your age wrong, it's when you confuse Steve with Penne that you need to start worrying

Last year I consulted with a local podiatrist: Dr. Robert F Herbold Jr. D.P.M. 4717 Swift Rd., Sarasota , FL – 34231  because I was being bothered with a couple of bunions  (yes I am at that age). I was very impressed with this Doctor.  He agreed that I had bunions, but he ventured that it was much too soon for surgery. (Now there’s a first). The background, the couple, my friends, the wedding ceremony, the Shaykh, the Priest,

The background   I have known the Keller/Bonsey family since 2000 when I became the Rector at St. James's, Cambridge, MA. They (Elisabeth Keller and the Revd. Steven Bonsey with their four children Noah, Sam, Josiah and Annie) had come back to Cambridge from Hawaii where Steve had been the Rector of an Episcopal parish. Steve had just been appointed as a Chaplain at Tufts University (no Sunday morning duties) so the entire family was able to enrich our common life at St. James's - which they did with great love and joy. I count them as friends and have stayed in touch with them since my retirement.  Noah, the oldest son is eloquent in Arabic (he spent a year in Damascus when Syria was a safe place).  He has developed a super career as an analyst of social media in the near East.    Noah worked in Tampa for a while a few years ago, so he and I were able to get together a few

It began in Bristol U.K. "A man dies" and "Jesus Christ Superstar"

I well remember the swirling controversy in Bristol, U.K. when a (Presbyterian) Minister the Revd, Earnest Marviin created a ":Rock Opera", called "A Man Dies"  in and for his congregation in the Lockleaze area of Bristol, U.K. Earnest Mrvin I was a sixteen years old member of the Plymouth Brethren Church back in those days, so I most likely disapproved of "A Man Dies" .  We, (the Plymouth Brethren),  disapproved of everything! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I had forgotten all about "A Man Dies" until earlier today when saw these pictures on the "Bristol, Then and Now"  Facebook page.   St. James Presbyterian Church, Lockleaze, Bristol  The Bristol Then and Now page includes the following commentary: Lockleaze, Bristol  -  'Jesus Christ Superstar' began at St.James (Presbyterian) Chur
